HICKORY, N.C.,None — Two men were arrested Saturday after police say they teamed up to try to steal Mariah Carey fragrance sets from Walmart.
One man walked out of the store on US 70, SE, at about 5 a.m. with two of the gift sets under his coat without paying for them, according to the police report.
The man tried to get into a black Ford Explorer that was waiting for him in the parking lot, but was unable to reach the car because he was being pursued by a Walmart employee, said Sgt. Brett Porter with the Hickory Police Department.
The man circled around the parking lot, again trying to evade the employee and get into the car but was unsuccessful. Porter said the driver of the Explorer backed out of the parking space quickly, striking the assistant manager who was trying to track down the shoplifter. The driver dragged the employee a short distance before leaving the parking lot.
Christopher Myers, 32, of Hickory, was arrested for misdemeanor larceny for the theft of $39 worth of Mariah Carey fragrances.
Spencer Ross, 30, of Hickory, was arrested a short time later for assault with a deadly weapon for striking the employee with his car.
Ross was arrested after police put out an all points bulletin for the Ford Explorer and an officer drove by it, Porter said.
"The driver said he was the one they were on the lookout for," Porter said.
Ross and Myers were each given $500 bonds.
The assistant manager had minor injuries.
