Reward Upped To $130K In Police Officer's Shooting

GASTONIA, N.C.,None — The reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who shot and killed Jonesville Police Department Sgt. Gregory Martin is now $130,000.

The FBI announced it's offering a $100,000 in the case, on top of the $30,000 already being offered.

Martin was shot multiple times during a traffic stop on the side of Interstate 77 in Yadkin County in October 1996. Martin's duty weapon was found in his holster when his body was found.

After the shooting, the killer dumped a truck stolen from a dealership in Princeton, W.Va., and stole a van from a business in Elkin, N.C., the FBI said. The van was later found abandoned in the Home Depot parking lot on Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia. FBI agents said the shooter has ties to one of those areas.

Agents said they believe someone knows who killed Martin.

"Anyone who dares to shoot and kill a member of law enforcement is inherently dangerous and should not be allowed to roam free and possibly live next door. The shooter has family members, friends or even neighbors who may know something," said Chris Briese, special agent in charge of the Charlotte Ddivision of the FBI. "We need those people to help us solve the murder of a man who died serving his community."

Chief Roger Reece of the Jonesville Police Department said investigators are committed to solving the case.

"The Jonesville Police, along with other local agencies and state and federal agencies, are committed to solving this case and bringing justice and closure to the Martin family," Reece said. "This year marks 15 years since Sgt. Martin's murder, and he is still missed today as if it happened yesterday."

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Charlotte division of the FBI at 704-377-9200 or the NC State Bureau of Investigation at 800-334-3000.
