2 men killed on South Carolina interstate after SUV runs out of gas

CAMDEN, S.C. — Authorities said two men whose SUV ran out of gas were struck and killed on a South Carolina interstate as they tried to cross the highway and get to a gas station.

Kershaw County Coroner David West said 56-year-old Walter St Clair Lashley and 27-year-old Joseph Noel Orta were killed around 1:30 a.m. Friday on Interstate 20 as they headed home from a family gathering.

West said a third person with them was not hurt.

West said in a statement the men ran out of gas near Exit 87.

State troopers said the men were hit by two vehicles and those drivers will not be charged because the men were in the highway and weren’t supposed to cross.
