New Mexico man attacked police over fear of snakes, police say

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A New Mexico man with a fear of snakes attacked police and tried to grab an officer’s gun on Saturday, officials said.

Police said Nathaniel Ryan Ramirez walked into a gas station shirtless and started yelling about snakes, the Las Cruces Sun News reported.

He then ran out of the store and into traffic. Police found him sitting atop a vehicle yelling about snakes. He told police he was bitten by a snake, however officers said he had no wounds.

As Ramirez was being taken into custody he became combative. He kicked a police vehicle and tried to take an officer's gun.

As Ramirez fought with officers he was yelling, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

He was eventually taken into custody and then to a hospital where he was placed under a 48-hour medical hold.

Ramirez was arrested and charged with attempting to disarm a police officer, battery upon a peace officer and resisting, evading or obstructing an arrest.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
