Sen. Elizabeth Warren tests positive for COVID-19

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts announced she has tested positive for COVID-19, the Democrat said on social media on Sunday.

“I regularly test for COVID and while I tested negative earlier this week, today I tested positive with a breakthrough case,” Warren tweeted. “Thankfully, I am only experiencing mild symptoms and am grateful for the protection provided against serious illness that comes from being vaccinated & boosted.”

Warren, 72, said she has been vaccinated and has also received a booster shot, boosted. She was on the Senate floor last week before the chamber broke for the holiday recess, CNN reported.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Sunday that the next few weeks will see severe stress on hospital systems due to the increase of the omicron variant, NBC News reported.

Fauci said there is no doubt on omicron’s “extraordinary capability” for transmission in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. Although the latest coronavirus mutation appears to have less severe symptoms in vaccinated people, Fauci warned that its transmissibility counteracts the mildness of the cases.

The U.S. is now averaging 126,967 new cases per day as of Saturday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. That figure is up from an average of more than 70,000 new cases per day at the beginning of November, according to the data.
