Water Main Break Shuts Down Outbound Lanes Of Carmel Road

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Crews from Charlotte's utilities company shut down outbound lanes of Carmel Road at 7 p.m. Tuesday to tend to a water main break.

The road is shut down near Quail Hollow Road while Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities crews make repairs to a leaking 30-inch water main.

Road crews are going to shift the traffic pattern on Carmel Road at 10 a.m. Wednesday to allow for one lane on travel in both directions. That change will be in place until the repairs are complete, officials said.

Officials said the road could be closed until Thursday morning because the repair turned out to be more complicated than crews first hoped.

According to CMUD officials, the pipe was accidentally struck Monday night by a boring contractor. The contractor was not doing work for the city at the time the water main was hit, officials said.

Crews scheduled the repair for Tuesday night. That's when they found the damage to be more extensive than they had anticipated, which required more time to repair the leak. As a result, crews revised the traffic plan on Carmel Road for the longer closure, utility officials said.

CMUD officials said no customers are without water service as a result of the repair.
