CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Wednesday, National Signing Day, is a huge day for local high school athletes, as they announce the decision of a lifetime and let everyone know where they plan to play in college.
National Signing Day may have lost a bit of its luster recently, with the NCAA's new early-signing period, but Wednesday was still a special day for a number of local athletes.
Athletes across the Charlotte region will sign their national letters of intent to play at the next level.
Most of the top players in the country are already signed and enrolled, but two standout student-athletes -- two-time Big 22 player to watch Dax Hollifield, from Shelby, and Big 22 finalist Rick Sandidge, of Concord, announced their college choices during signing ceremonies at their respective schools.

Hollifield, a linebacker, committed to Virginia Tech and will become a Hokie, turning down offers from North Carolina, Clemson and Stanford.
Sandidge, a defensive tackle, signed to play at South Carolina.
Harding University quarterback Braheam Murphy, who went from academically ineligible to moving in with head coach Sam Greiner to winning a state championship, signed to play for Army.
“It’s just the beginning now because I've got a big journey ahead and I know I'm not done yet, so I got to keep pushing,” Murphy said.
