If you’ve found yourself with a dead car battery in need of some juice, you’re going to need a jump start! Before you can get your car going again, you’re going to need certain equipment. To jump start a car, you will need jumper cables as well as another running vehicle with a working battery! Once you’ve found someone to give you a jump, you’re going to want to follow these steps!
Step #1: First, our friendly auto service technicians suggest checking the condition of your car battery. If it is leaking, rusted or damaged –do not attempt to jump start it! If your battery is OK, then position the other running vehicle that is giving you a jump close enough for the cables to reach. With their car facing yours, get out the jumper cables.
Step #2: It is important to make sure you are connecting the jumper cables carefully and correctly. To jump start a car battery carefully…
- Connect the RED cable to the POSITIVE terminals of both car batteries.
- Connect the BLACK cable to the NEGATIVE terminal of just the vehicle that is working and running.
- The other end of the black cable should be connected to something metal and not connected to the battery in order to ground it.
Step #3: The professionals at our Charlotte auto service center suggest waiting several minutes for the battery to get a decent charge before trying to turn it on.
Step #4: After you’ve waited for the electricity to flow, attempt to turn on your car. If it doesn’t work the first time, attempt a couple more times. Once you get your car started again, let it run for a 15-30 minutes to ensure the charge of the battery sticks!
Step #5: Carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order of how you attached them. Remove the black cables first, followed by the red.
