Action 9: Woman Frustrated By Reimbursement Process

UNION COUNTY, N.C.,None — A Union County woman said her doctor was paid twice -- once by her and once by an insurance company -- but that she couldn't get a reimbursement.

Gloria Williams said she underwent months of treatment at Stanly Orthopedic & Hand Surgery Clinic after a car crash last year that wasn't her fault.

Williams said she and her husband, John, made co-payments to the clinic and her insurer paid the rest of her bills while waiting months for the other driver's insurance, Nationwide, to settle.

But even after Nationwide sent the clinic a full settlement check last October, Williams said, the clinic didn't reimburse her for $673 in copayments.

Williams said she called at least eight times.

"Each time, I was told the check would be in the mail," she said.

Nationwide sent the clinic a statement the check should be sent to Williams instead of her insurer, Blue Cross Blue Shield.

When Williams still didn't get a check, Action 9 contacted the clinic. A spokeswoman said they were trying to get confirmation from Blue Cross Blue Shield that it had been reimbursed by Nationwide. She said without that, BCBS could come back to them later and ask for payment.

After Action 9 got involved, Williams got her money. Now, she has advice for others.

"Make sure you keep up with your bills and how much each insurance pays the doctor," Williams said.
