Action 9: Woman Surprised By Limitations In Trip Cancellation Insurance

None — One woman discovered limitations to her trip cancellation insurance after cancer treatments forced her to miss her Florida vacation.

Nancy Crawford said she rescheduled a family vacation to Florida for last January, but then couldn't go because of her cancer treatments.

"I called and let them know we couldn't make it and (asked) could they please exchange it for another time for us, and they refused," Crawford said.

She said Westgate Resorts refused to reschedule her trip to this coming October when she declined to pay a $100 fee. She said she thought she had unlimited protection after spending $29 for trip cancellation insurance.

But to Crawford's surprise, a Westgate representative told her it was good for only one cancellation. Crawford had already used it once, when she was sick from chemotherapy last October.

"They told us the insurance was for if I wanted to change it," Crawford said. "They didn't tell me it was for one time."

Action 9 contacted Westgate Resorts in Florida, but a spokesperson declined comment.

Then, the company waived its $100 fee and re-booked Crawford's vacation for October, when she hopes to be recovered from treatments and ready to travel.

"I really do need this vacation," Crawford said. "I feel good, I really do."

Action 9's Don Griffin said Crawford's experience serves as a reminder to anyone buying trip cancellation insurance to find out the complete terms of coverage.
