Where’s the money? People still dealing with issues getting 2nd stimulus check

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Amid talk of President-elect Joe Biden’s stimulus proposal and the possibility of a third stimulus check, several people have contacted Action 9 because they have yet to receive the second payment that was issued a few weeks ago.

According to Action 9 investigator Jason Stoogenke, there could be many reasons why someone has not received their money.

Darlene Wright of Chester said she has checked the IRS website, IRS.gov, and it states her stimulus payment was issued Jan. 4, but she has not received the money.

“Well, I’m not going to lie. I mean God is good to me, but I can use the money,” she said.

Tina Brittain of Union County said she has not received her money either.

“There’s a lot of us that haven’t received it,” she said.

Brittain said she has tried calling the IRS several times. The one time she got through, she was put on hold for a couple of hours and never spoke with a real person.

According to Stoogenke, there are several reasons why someone may not have received their payment:

  • You are ineligible. For example, lawmakers left many college students and other adult dependents out of this round.
  • You changed banks or moved since the first stimulus check.
  • The check was stolen.
  • Your identity was stolen.
  • The check got lost in the mail.
  • The IRS sent your payment on a debit card and you mistook it for junk mail.
  • The IRS sent the money to the bank account your tax preparer used for your refund. If this is the case, you should get the money by Feb. 1.

No matter what the reason is, if you do not receive a second stimulus payment, you can request it when you file your taxes.

Stoogenke said you should ask for a “recovery rebate credit” on your 1040 form.

Action 9 will continue to follow developments on this story.
