BofA gets exclusive rights at airport ATMs

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Soon, travelers will only see one bank's ATM at Charlotte Douglas Airport.

Bank of America now has exclusive rights for three years at the airport.

Four banks have in the past operated ATMs at the airport.

In return, Bank of America agreed to pay the airport $1.2 million each year, plus 75 cents for every transaction.

But some city leaders were nervous about allowing a monopoly. "I happen to like choice and competition as well as convenience," said Charlotte City Councilman Michael Barnes.

Channel 9 has learned that 70 percent of people at the airport used Bank of America ATMs last year.

For non-Bank of America customers, that will likely mean a fee assessed by the bank and possibly the user's bank if money is withdrawn.

Construction on a new parking garage at the airport should get under way soon.

On Monday night, City Council approved a $120 million contract for the garage.

The seven-level deck will house hourly parking and rental cars in 7,000 spaces.

Officials are using airport bonds to pay for the parking garage.
