CATS to spend $400K to raise trolley platforms

As city leaders decide what kind of modern trolley they will buy for uptown, Channel 9 learned more about the added costs and how many people are actually using it.

The city wants to spend around $33 million for the new trolleys when the second leg opens around 2020.

Channel 9 anchor Scott Wickersham asked Charlotte Area Transit System officials for the latest numbers and learned about 1,700 people are using the trolley each day, on average, from January to March.

They projected 1,100 per day.

Wickersham also found out before the new trolley cars go in, the city will have to raise up nine platforms already in place. That will cost $400,000.

CATS officials said the benches and shelters can simply be unbolted and put back down.

On Thursday, the city unveiled what the new cars could look like. City leaders are expected to choose a vendor in July.

City leaders took a trip to Denver, Colorado, to learn more about it's transportation system as they push to make it easier for you to get around Charlotte.

Here is breakdown of the ridership numbers for the trolley:

  • January 2016: 1,707 average daily passenger trips
  • February 2016: 1,762 average daily passenger trips
  • March 2016: 1,606 average daily passenger trips
