CMPD raises, affordable housing to be addressed in budget presentation

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte’s city manager will present his budget to the City Council on Monday evening.

The budget presentation comes at a time when City Council is dealing with several major issues, including affordable housing and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department pay raises.

CMPD officers have made a big push to get council's attention over pay raises. Currently, the department is short about 200 officers.

Channel 9 has reported that some officers are leaving Charlotte for better pay in other cities, like Raleigh.

Officers have asked the City Council for a 15 percent raise across the board, as well as better health care. Initially, city leaders said the raise increase alone could cost taxpayers $21.8 million.

Also on Monday night, the public will find out how much money the city will ask voters for to support affordable housing in 2018.

Mayor Vi Lyles wants to increase the housing trust fund from $15 million to $50 million. Charlotteans will also find out whether a tax increase will be needed for that.

After City Manager Marcus Jones presents the budget to council at 5 p.m., city leaders will have a few weeks to look it over before they vote next month.

Channel 9 reporter Joe Bruno will be at Monday evening’s budget presentation and will have a full breakdown on Eyewitness News.
