Firefighters Rescue Drivers From Flood Waters In Boone

BOONE, N.C.,None — Firefighters rescued two drivers Tuesday who became trapped by flood waters in Boone.

Heavy rain hit Watauga County on Tuesday morning, causing flash flooding in some areas.

Two drivers near the Boone Mall became trapped after water from a nearby creek rose quickly. Firefighters helped them to safety.

"I just didn't realize it was that deep," driver Frank Winkler said. "I was trying to beat a red light and took the wrong shortcut."

"I just made a turn and the water (was) up so high, I realized, ‘I can't even move my car anymore,'" driver Leon Tran said.

The creek flooded quickly, with the water rising out of its banks in about 15 minutes.

The rain began to taper off in the early afternoon, but several area creeks and rivers remained high.
