Funeral Held For Murdered CMS Teacher

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Seventh grader Briana Brewer spent Saturday afternoon attending a funeral for her teacher, Anthony Davis.

Davis, 38, taught business computer tech classes at Randolph Middle School. He was found shot to death in his home earlier this week.

"We had fun in his class but we were serious with it too and so we learned a lot from him," Brewer said.

Briana said Davis was well-liked among students and teachers. She and many of her classmates spent the week finding ways to cope with his sudden death.

"We all made posters and cards, and we created a shrine around his door," she said.

To help his students in the healing process, Judy Williams with Mothers of Murdered Offspring is holding a vigil in Davis' memory next week.

"Children are still so young; they don't understand life and death, they just know that something has been extracted out of their life they care about and our goal is to help them deal with that part that's been taken away," Williams said.

Even in his death, Briana said Davis' impact on students like her will remain.

"We learned today at the funeral; don't think of it as a death, think of it as a happiness he's in a better place. Even though he's not here on earth, but he's still with us in a way," she said.

Ashanti Bess, 22, is charged with killing Davis. Family members said he mentored Bess for several years.
