1 inmate dead after incident at correctional center

ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — One inmate is dead after an incident at Lanesboro Correctional Center in Anson County.

The inmate was identified as 35-year-old Wesley Turner in a news release from N.C. Department of Public Safety. He was stabbed and later pronounced dead at the Anson Community Hospital, according to the release.

Eyewitness News learned Turner was serving time for murder and was scheduled to be released in 2017. Channel 9 also learned he tried to escape from Northampton County Prison in 1999 while working in a cotton field, and an officer shot him in the chest and back. A fellow inmate was killed during that escape attempt.

Officials said an altercation broke out between several inmates around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Another inmate was injured and is being treated, according to officials.

Prison managers have locked down the institution, which is in Polkton, while the incident is investigated.

The SBI and the Anson County Sheriff's Office are on site conducting an investigation.
