11-year-old boy shot while playing in west Charlotte, police say

CHARLOTTE — An 11-year-old boy playing in a parking lot was shot in the leg Sunday night on Leake Street off West Boulevard, in an apparent drive-by, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

The boy was playing at the Little Rock Apartments around 8 p.m. when he was shot.

Witnesses told Channel 9 that they saw a dark-colored car with four young people inside drive down the parking lot, turn around and pull out a gun aimed at four young girls.

As the car drove away – witnesses told us the suspects fired, missing the girls, but hitting two unoccupied cars and the little boy instead.

Witnesses said he was standing by the dumpsters when the bullet grazed his leg. He was taken to a hospital, but is expected to be OK.

Neighbors told Channel 9 that police arrived within minutes, but the shooters had already sped off.

Neighbor Kam Perkins said she heard about 8 gunshots that night and ran outside to see what happened.

“I was definitely sad, I have kids and if they were outside they could have possibly been hit,” she said.

Several residents told us the neighborhood is a problem area and they’re concerned with all the kids that live there.

Channel 9 crimemapped the area and found police are called out often for a number of reasons. We even found a bullet casing lodged in the dirt off the sidewalk.

No arrests have been made in Sunday’s shooting.
