CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Two children were hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after a car crashed into a playground in Chapel Hill, according to WTVD.
Officials told WTVD the wreck happened around 4 p.m. when the car crashed through a fence and struck playground equipment at Northside Elementary School, where there were 20 children playing at the time.
Two children on the playground were injured and taken to UNC Hospitals. The driver was also taken to the hospital for treatment. Another child was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Chapel Hill police told WTVD that the children and driver are all expected to recover.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools told WTVD that all of the children on the playground were part of the Community Schools After School Program. The students were between the ages of 5 to 9 years old. It isn’t known whether all of the students attended Northside Elementary School.
Ebony and Tiffany Riley, sisters who both have children at Northside Elementary school, talked to WTVD and described the incident as “traumatizing.”
“We ran outside in the parking lot. We didn’t see anything and we went to go get my daughter from after school, and that’s when we saw all the cops pull up and everything,” said the sisters, who live across the street from the school. “We hope they pull through and their injuries are not serious and for the driver as well. Whoever that driver is, we hope that they’re OK as well because this couldn’t be on purpose.”
Chapel Hill Police crisis counselors are assisting the families involved.
The incident remains under investigation.
