FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A search and rescue that began Thursday night was still taking place Friday in Cumberland County after state troopers were told that two vehicles ran off the Interstate 95 bridge near Fayetteville and into the Cape Fear River.
First responders were called to the bridge shortly after 7 p.m. A witness said two cars crashed into each other before careening off the bridge and into the river below.

Rescue teams searched the river for hours Thursday night but did not find anything. Crews told our partners WTVD that the river could run as deep as 19 feet in that area.
