4 hurt, including toddler, in North Myrtle Beach boat fire, officials say

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Fire officials said four people were hurt, including a toddler, in a boat fire in North Myrtle Beach Monday, WPDE reported.

Crews responded around 2 p.m. to a boat near the Johnny Causey Boat Landing in Cherry Grove, under the Highway 17 ICW bridge. Officials said smoke could be seen coming from the boat on the water.

The four people were taken to a hospital with burn injuries, officials said. Their conditions are unknown at this point, according to WPDE.

More than two hours after crews got to the scene, the boat was removed and inspected. The North Myrtle Beach Fire chief determined the boat was a total loss.

“That’s absolutely the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that, when you’re going over, fixing to get on a bridge, and all of a sudden this black smoke comes up over the side, it was pretty scary,” a woman, who was driving on the Highway 17 bridge at the time, told WPDE.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and authorities are investigating what led to the fire.

No other details have been released.
