ANDERSON, S.C. — Four people were killed and three others hurt in a wreck on Highway 81 in Anderson, South Carolina, authorities said Saturday.
The accident happened about 6 p.m. Friday. Three people were trapped in their vehicles and pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth person died hours later while in surgery at Prisma Health in Greenville, South Carolina, Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said.
Chief Deputy Coroner Don McCown identified the victims as William Larry, 48; Drew Visioli, 71; James Lovorn, 75; and Peggy Visioli, 71.
All four are from Anderson, he said. Each of the victims had multiple traumatic injuries secondary to blunt force trauma, the coroner’s office said.
Investigators said Larry, the driver of a Ford Expedition, was headed south on Highway 81 when he crossed the centerline, striking a northbound Honda, driven by Drew Visioli, head-on.
An 11-year-old boy in Larry’s vehicle was transported to an area hospital with moderate injuries, while a 2-year-old boy sitting in the rear of Visioli’s car had minor injuries. Another person in the Honda had serious injuries and is being treated at Prisma Health.
A dog in the Ford Expedition also died at the scene.
The accident remains under investigation.
