The work zone is already dangerous, and now workers must make sure they don't accidentally grab what seems to be years worth of dangerous debris along the highway in Winston Salem.

Flatiron Construction safety manager David Davis said, “We found a lot of knives out here and under the bridges, we found a lot of makeshift weapons.”

Officials said 450 used needles along the entire 1.2-mile stretch were found Tuesday.

“Somebody had climbed into it over the weekend and left a bag of drugs and had bled all over the inside of the excavator,” said Davis.

Professional cleanup crews were called to make sure the equipment and area is safe before crews can get back to work.

“We want to protect the public,” Davis said. “We want to protect ourselves.”
