1 arrested, another sought after 5 hurt in drive-by shooting in Grier Heights

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a suspect and are looking to question another after a drive-by shooting Friday night in Grier Heights.

Police said five people were shot around 10 p.m. as a suspect was driving along Marney Avenue near Randolph Road in southeast Charlotte.

All five people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Neighbor Judith Brown said she and her husband had just gone to bed when the barrage of gunfire echoed through their window.

“It seemed like we were in a movie. It just kept going and going and going,” Brown told reporter Mark Becker Monday.

Detectives arrested Davion Larome Redfearn, 40, in connection with the shooting and have charged him with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He is being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail with bail set at $25,000 for each of those counts.

Police said Redfearn shot four others and accidentally shot himself also. Channel 9 learned he was initially listed as one of the victims who had been hit by the gunfire before he was arrested early Saturday morning.

Channel 9 spoke with three of the shooting victims and all of them said they’re OK, but none wanted to talk about what happened that night.

Officials are asking the public for help in identifying the driver of a white, four-door sedan for questions in this case.

A woman, who did not want to be identified, said the incident happened during a balloon release for her 11-year-old granddaughter who died after a long battle with heart disease earlier in the morning.

She said someone drove by and started shooting and that all of the shooting victims are loved ones.

Neighbors told Channel 9 that they were very upset about the situation. They said they couldn’t believe someone would interrupt the memorial of an 11-year-old in this way.

Many neighbors said they knew the little girl who had passed away and that she was very brave. They said that even though she was sick, you would have never known it based on the smile that she greeted everyone with.

Redfearn was arrested in March of 2019 for assault by pointing a gun, and assault on a female communicating threats.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and was released from jail a day and a half later. He was then placed on probation for an unknown amount of time, according to the Department of Corrections website.

No further information has been released.
