CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a double homicide after a shooting occurred during a street takeover and car meet-up event over the weekend.
Two 16-year-olds and two 19-year-olds were shot in an industrial zone located off Ridge Creek Drive.
CMPD Chief Estella Patterson confirmed the fatal incident stems from a recurring issue law enforcement officers have encountered for several months.
In response to rising youth victimization during late hours, CMPD recently created a youth curfew intended to prevent minors from being exposed to violence.
Investigators have not disclosed the cause of the shooting, including whether it stemmed from a dispute or a physical altercation.
As of the report, law enforcement officials have made no arrests in connection with the double homicide.
Patterson spoke with Channel 9 regarding the department’s efforts to address late-night youth gatherings.
“It’s not just teen takeovers; it’s anywhere we see our young people are out because we know victimization happens in those late hours,” Patterson said.
She noted that a 16-year-old was killed and a 19-year-old was involved at the street takeover and car meet-up event.
“We want to start with an education campaign so people know about it,” Patterson said regarding the new curfew.
Patterson emphasized that parents must remain aware of where their children are late at night.
“We don’t want to have to call parents to say your child has been involved in something major where they are harmed in some way,” Patterson said.
Police officers encountering minors out after curfew plan to contact their parents rather than focus solely on issuing violations.
If the same youths repeatedly violate the curfew, CMPD plans to coordinate additional enforcement measures alongside the District Attorney’s office.
“In your more egregious cases, we have that expectation that they will prosecute, but it just depends,” Patterson said.
