After noise complaint, neighbor says loud music protects chickens

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — After Action 9′s story on a neighbor who said he had to deal with loud music for up to 12 hours a day, the resident accused of blasting the tunes says there’s a reason for it.

Last week, Bryan Plourde in Lincoln County reached out to Action 9′s Jason Stoogenke saying his neighbor’s house was too loud, causing him to lose his ability to have peace and quiet.

On Tuesday, Stoogenke talked to that neighbor after he sent a message to Action 9.

He told Stoogenke that he owns more than 70 chickens, and that he considers his property a farm. The county’s noise rules don’t apply to “normal day-to-day operations” of a farm, and he argues that he used the music to keep predators away from his chickens.

The neighbor told Stoogenke that he has cut down on how often he plays the music, and he also moved his speaker farther from Plourde’s house.

But he’s still due in court next week after being cited by deputies. He’ll present his case and see if the county agrees with his use of music as “normal day-to-day operations” of a farm.
