American Airlines to scrap flight from CLT to Honolulu in scheduling shift

CHARLOTTE — American Airlines began flying to Honolulu from Charlotte Douglas International Airport in May. That seasonal route was initially expected to end in September, however, American extended it by four months due to customer demand.

But that daily flight will cease after Jan. 3, American Airlines said this week. The reason is twofold.

The first and most important factor, according to Brian Znotins, American’s vice president of network planning? American needs the Boeing 777-200 aircraft currently used for the Charlotte-Honolulu route to service its long-haul network this upcoming summer.

As a result of delivery delays and a lack of wide-body aircraft, American has eliminated or pushed back the start of several routes for the summer months. At CLT, American expects to offer daily flights to Dublin; Rome; Frankfurt, Germany; London; Madrid, Spain; and Munich. However, it does not plan to fly to Paris or Barcelona, Spain, from the Charlotte airport.
