American Airlines phases out emotional support animals

American Airlines is reminding passengers that in the near future only trained service animals can fly in cabins with passengers.

The airline said if an animal is a trained service animal, passengers must complete the U.S. Department of Transportation Service Animal Air Transportation form before the trip. If the animal doesn’t qualify as a trained service animal, then it could be considered a pet and will be considered either a carry-on pet or a cargo pet.

The form is to be filed 48 hours before a flight unless the travel is booked in that same window. The form is valid for a year or when vaccinations expire.

The airline said the changes were issued, “aligning with regulations recently issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The new policies and procedures are intended to support customers with disabilities and the service animals that travel with them, as well as the team members who work to keep customers safe.”

A service animal is considered “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability.”

The rule goes into effect on Jan. 11 but existing bookings will be honored through the end of the month.
