The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call just before 5 p.m. at a home on Sims Drive. They were told a man, later identified as 20-year-old Tre-Kedrian Tyquan White, was outside the home armed with a handgun and causing a disturbance.

When the first deputy arrived and stepped out of his patrol car, White fired a single shot at him, according to the sheriff’s office. The bullet did not hit the deputy but struck the driver’s side mirror and lodged in the doorframe.

White then ran behind the house and got into a Honda Accord just as a second deputy arrived. White took off, leading deputies on a chase into Chester County, officials said.

The chase spanned more than 40 miles and hit speeds of 100 mph down Highway 200, then onto Highway 21, and finally Highway 9 in the Lewisville area of Chester County. There were no shots exchanged between White and Lancaster County deputies during the pursuit, authorities told Channel 9.

Lancaster County officials said no deputies fired their weapons during the incident and that no Lancaster County deputies were hurt.

Once in Chester County on Highway 9, officials said White wrecked his car near the entrance of the ATI Specialty Materials Plant and ran into the woods.

A short time later, White stepped into the middle of the road trying to flag down another car in an attempt to carjack the driver, according to Chester County officials. That driver happened to be a Chester County deputy responding to the incident in an unmarked vehicle.

The deputy stopped and White tried to open the passenger door of the vehicle while pointing a gun at the deputy. That’s when the deputy shot at White, who then ran into the woods.

It’s unclear if White was hit by that bullet, but a short time later he was found dead in the woods with a gun beside him, deputies said. No Chester County deputies were injured during the incident.

“Our prayers and condolences are with the family of this young man,” said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile. “Multiple agencies responded quickly to this event, and I am thankful for the coordination, cooperation, and efforts of all agencies and officers involved. Unfortunately, this incident ended tragically. However, we are all thankful no other citizens or police officers were injured.”

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office, Lancaster Sheriff, York Sheriff, Great Falls Police Department, Fort Lawn Police Department, Highway Patrol and SLED were all involved in the search.

SLED is investigating the incident. The agency said this is the first officer-involved shooting in Chester County in 2021. In 2020, there were 49 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina -- one involved the Chester County Sheriff’s Office.
