Atrium Health finalizes merger with midwestern healthcare company

CHARLOTTE — After announcing their plans to come together in May, Atrium Health and Aurora Advocate Health said they have closed on their formal combination to create Advocate Health.

The two large healthcare systems, which announced the plan for Advocate Health in May, have been waiting on federal and state regulatory approvals.

Advocate Health is looking to bring medical innovations to patients more quickly, address the root causes of health inequities, advance population health, enable career advancement and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

The CEO of Advocate Health, Eugene A. Woods, says the new medical center will have a large staff to go beyond traditional healthcare limitations.

“Powered by 150,000 teammates, including the best and brightest physicians, nurses, researchers and faculty, we are poised to push past traditional geographic and care delivery boundaries to create a healthier tomorrow for all,” said Woods.

Advocate Health’s headquarters will be in Charlotte, with locations in Chicago and Milwaukee and plans for a new, Milwaukee-based health equity institute.

Advocate Health Care, Atrium Health and Aurora Health Care will continue to provide for their communities, with Wake Forest University as the academic center.

The board of directors has put together an equal number of members from both Advocate Aurora and Atrium Health. Thomas C. Nelson, chair of Atrium’s board of directors, will chair the new board until Dec. 31, 2023. Advocate Aurora’s Michele Richardson will take leadership for a two-year term after that.
