Atrium Health plans $147 million hospital in Lake Norman area

LAKE NORMAN, N.C. — Charlotte-based Atrium Health is planning a $147.1 million hospital in the north Charlotte region.

The 160,000-square-foot facility would operate as an extension of Atrium's University City location. It would be at the southwest corner of Westmoreland Road and N.C. Highway 21 in Cornelius.

Plans call for 30 acute-care beds -- 20 medical/surgical, six labor and delivery and four intensive care.

Other highlights include 10 emergency bays with a helipad; three operating rooms, one of which is dedicated to C-sections; imaging services; and an on-site laboratory and pharmacy.

Atrium said plans for the Lake Norman hospital are in response to a growing population in that area. It's part of the health-care system's larger strategy to bring care closer to the patients.
