Police identify women arrested after hours-long standoff with CMPD

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two women surrendered to police Thursday night after an hours-long standoff with police.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers located a vehicle at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday that was stolen during an armed robbery in the morning.

The CMPD helicopter followed the stolen vehicle when two women jumped and ran from it and into an apartment at Peppertree Apartments near Kilborne Drive and Central Avenue.

Officers established a perimeter and made contact with the women, who they later identified as 23-year-old Caleena Reece and 20-year-old Lisa Laskowski.

Residents of the apartment complex were relocated as a precaution during the negotiation.

Members from K-9, SWAT and negotiators responded to the scene to assist and nearly four hours later, police took the two women into custody.

During the standoff, residents were kept from their homes for hours, but neighbors said they're thankful no one was hurt.

“The female officer on the megaphone actually said, ‘I'm really proud of you. Just keep doing what you're doing. Come out with your hands up. You're doing great.’ I thought that was a really strong move by Charlotte PD,” said Harrison Fahrer.

CMPD Chief Kerr Putney said of the 68 SWAT situations this year, only two have ended with violence.

Reece and Laskowski have been charged with armed robbery and will face additional charges, police said.
