Barber opens doors to teens after tragedy strikes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A double murder stunned the west Charlotte community almost 10 years ago when two teenage brothers were shot and killed.

Their godparent, Eddie Catlin, who owns a barber shop, is using his story to make a difference.

"It hurt me when it happened, but I feel like I was put in a position to change and help others, so that this won't happen to them," Catlin said.

In 2008, a 17-year-old shot and killed Josh Davis and Terry Long on West Boulevard.

Catlin said he was there that day and the lives of the three teens were ruined because of a disagreement.

The tragedy motivated him to start the Distinguished Gentlemen Barber Shop, where many of his customers are teens.

"If I can just save one person's life, change one person's life with them just sitting in my barber's chair, that's the most important thing to me," Catlin said.

Catlin said he's only been open for about two months on Shamrock Drive but feels he is already making a difference.

"It's a good feeling, man,” Catlin said. “It's a great feeling."

Catlin said a simple conversation about the difference between right and wrong changes lives.

Catlin doesn't give up on teens when many others have.

"If I can just change one life because that life could change another life," Catlin said.

Montrez Williams, who shot the teens, is serving life in prison.
