CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The store announced it would be giving away $1 million in gift cards for first 250 customers and 400 doorbusters during the shopping season.
Belk announced in September that it will be hiring an additional 5,800 seasonal employees to support its 297 stores in 16 states.
More stores have been pushing back the start of the holiday shopping season each year.
Earlier in October, GameStop and Staples said that their stores would be closed for Thanksgiving Day. The stores will reopen on Nov. 27 for Black Friday sales.
Last year, Target, Sears and Kohl's were among retailers that opened as early as 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
Kmart had deals starting at 6 a.m.
Outdoor retailer REI said last week it would be closing its doors on Black Friday to encourage shoppers to get outdoors.
