Gastonia club owner has to surrender alcohol license after 2 officers, 4 others shot

GASTONIA, N.C. — A Gastonia club owner has two weeks to surrender her license to sell alcohol after a shooting that left six people hurt, including two off-duty police officers.

Last week, the ABC Commission decided Remedies Restaurant and Nightclub should not be allowed to sell alcohol following a 2020 shooting in the parking lot.

Officers hired to provide security were shot when investigators said one man started firing a gun in the parking lot.

The district attorney asked Alcohol Law Enforcement to pull the license from Remedies, citing about 200 calls for service at the business.

The owner said she will have to shut down if they can’t sell alcohol.

Bond upped for man accused of shooting 2 officers, 4 others at Gastonia nightclub

One of the suspects in the Nov. 12, 2020 shooting at the Gastonia nightclub had his bond significantly raised in November.

Six people, including two Gastonia police officers, were hit by gunfire that night at the club on Union Road.

Officials said the officers who were hurt, Sgt. E. Nelson and Officer M. Lewis, were working off-duty at the time and were trying to de-escalate a situation when they were shot. Both were expected to recover from their injuries.

Detectives charged Alonzo Lewis Hamilton and Allen Slaughter with six counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon. Slaughter had a $1 million bond and was in jail since Nov. 2020.

Slaughter’s attorney said in court that police were mistaken when they arrested him for the shooting. However, prosecutors said several witnesses saw Slaughter fire a gun and that his DNA was found on the weapon. They said there was little doubt that he was the shooter.

Slaughter’s bond was bumped to $1.5 million.

The county district attorney said the Gastonia business was a public nuisance. He gave the nightclub a warning letter in Nov. 2020. In the two years prior, Channel 9 discovered police were called to the club 201 times.

North Carolina’s ABC issued an alcohol suspension order as well, mentioning the shooting and also a pattern of problems at the nightclub, including how Gastonia officers are routinely there around closing time because fights break out.
