ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Rowan County deputies arrested a Catawba College housekeeper and his girlfriend who are accused of selling methamphetamine.
Deputies said Robin Lee Guest, 50, and Melanie Ann Pruitt, 38, received packages of meth or "ice" through the mail and then sold the drugs in the Salisbury area.
Investigators said Guest would wire money to California and then receive the drugs in the mail.
Guest, who worked in housekeeping for the college, lived in a house owned by Catawba College.
Zach Roddy remembers seeing Guest work in his dorm last year.
He didn't know Rowan County was investigating Guest for selling meth on campus.
"It's kind of weird to think about because he is so close by," Roddy said.
Investigators said no one from Catawba College was involved.
"It would have been very discrete. No one would have known what was going on," said Chief Deputy David Ramsey with the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.
Ramsey said Guest had meth delivered by mail from California and then dealers came to his house to buy the meth.
"A lot of times there is violence associated with narcotics trafficking and you don't want to bring that to that location," Ramsey said.
Police investigated for more than a year and said they made several large undercover buys from Guest and his live-in girlfriend, Melanie Pruitt.
They arrested Guest while he was working on campus Tuesday.
"I am glad that he is away from our campus," Roddy said.
They found Pruitt hiding in a closet at their home.
During their investigation, agents searched a private network for police and learned Guest had previous drug convictions in California before he came to Catawba College.
"I am certain in their background check that conviction did not show up," Ramsey said.
He was convicted of possession of controlled substances in California in 1993 and 2001.
Pruitt was convicted in Rowan County of cocaine charges in 1998, 2000 and 2002.
Investigators seized a total of 155 grams of meth valued at $31,000.
Guest is charged with four counts of trafficking meth by sale and possession, three counts of possession of meth, three counts of sale of meth, five counts of maintaining a residence for keeping and selling a controlled substance and two counts of conspiracy to sell meth.
His bond was set at $250,000.
Pruitt was charged with two counts of conspiracy and one count of resist, delay and obstruct a public officer.
Her bond was set at $21,000.
