Chopper 9 Skyzoom was on the scene.
The driver sped up a busy Independence Boulevard with police behind him.
He rear-ended the woman who drove this Honda Accord, spinning her onto the side of the road.
The startled woman didn't want to show her face.
She said she never saw it coming. "Not until the cops got here," she said.
The driver drove about another three and half miles into the Hunting Ridge Apartments.
We saw the Escalade with scratches all over.
The man at the wheel got out and ran.
Police set up a perimeter
They brought in a helicopter to search from overhead and dogs to search on the ground
From Chopper 9 we could see officers checking around buildings and searching the woods nearby.
"It's a little scary. Especially when I live by myself. So I just basically locked down,” neighbor Sylvia Ard said.
Police put KinderCare Learning Center on lockdown.
It's next door to the apartment complex.
"I got a call from the daycare saying they are on lockdown so they need to clear the building," parent Lakiya Berry said.
Parents coming to pick up their children had to wait in the car.
Daycare workers and police escorted them to their parents waiting arms.
They also waited at bus stops as children arrived home from school.
