CHARLOTTE — The Teal Turnip will put the focus on small plates and craft cocktails when it debuts in Oakhurst this week.

Husband-and-wife team Steve McGinley and Taylor Kastl are behind that 2,500-square-foot restaurant. Both are chefs who graduated from Johnson & Wales University, Charlotte.

The restaurant aims to be food focused and chef driven.

Kastl declined to share a total investment cost but says the project was self-financed, with a Small Business Administration loan making it possible.

“We are aiming for everything we always wished the industry to be: Accepting, inclusive, work-life balance, a career and not just a job,” she says.

The Teal Turnip is at 1640 Oakhurst Commons Drive, Suite 105, making it neighbors with Swirl, NoDa Yoga and Night Swim Coffee.

The restaurant will participate in the community’s Cinco de Mayo block party on May 5, dishing up what it’s calling posh tacos and signature drinks.

It will open for regular lunch and dinner service on May 6, with its full menu available.
