CHARLOTTE, N.C. — More professional sports could be coming to Charlotte -- that's if Mecklenburg County officials can agree on whether to expand Memorial Stadium in uptown.
Channel 9 received a preliminary design for the expansions Wednesday.
The expansions would allow for Major League Soccer tournaments.
Currently, only football, lacrosse and non-professional soccer games are played at the stadium.
The Charlotte Hounds believe an expanded field could attract a professional MLS franchise to Charlotte.
The Hounds lacrosse team is working with county officials to find funding. The team has already committed at least $1.5 million to the project.
County manager Dena Diorio will make the final decision in the next few weeks. County officials estimate it could take another $2 million to complete it.
