CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A critical partner in a plan to redevelop the land where Eastland Mall once sat is expressing some concerns about the proposal.
Council signed off on the plan, and now some commissioners told city staff the presentation they were given is going to be a hard sell.
The plan would require a public-private partnership, and the developer would need to invest in building the housing and retail space.
The city bought the land and is paying to rehabilitate it for development, while the county would have to pay for a park and work with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to build a new school.
The city has not found a developer and because of some past failed public-private deals with the city, some commissioners were apprehensive about signing on.
"You've got a tough sell when it comes to the county," Mecklenburg County Commissioner Dumont Clarke said. "And I think ultimately doing nothing is not really an option and it costs us a lot."
City staff told the board this plan can be adjusted.
