Charlotte Motor Speedway to host NASCAR All-Star Race in July

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR announced Thursday that its All-Star Race will be a midweek event held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on July 15.

The $1 million, winner-take-all showdown was originally scheduled for May 16, but was postponed due to the coronavirus.

This is the first time in the event’s 36-year history that will be contested mid-week.

Speedway officials have not decided if fans will be able to attend the race, but said they’re discussing options with health officials.

"We will work hard with our state and local officials to explore what options are available, if any, to have this race enjoyed by fans in person. Entertaining fans at the track is part of who we are, but we want to do so in a way that everyone feels comfortable with given current health concerns,” Executive Vice President and General Manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway Greg Walter said.

Thursday’s announcement is part of a new revision to the schedule that runs through the first weekend of August.

The ARCA Menards Series General Tire 150 is slated for 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, followed by the All-Star Open at 7:00 p.m. and the NASCAR All-Star Race at around 8:30 p.m.

The revisions involve Pocono Raceway and the speedways in Indianapolis, Kentucky, Texas, Kansas and New Hampshire. NASCAR made no mention of whether spectators will be allowed at any of the events but Indianapolis, Kentucky and Kansas all said their events would not have fans. NASCAR leadership has not been available for public comment since May 17.
