CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Navy veteran says he is stopping at nothing to see justice is brought in the case of his grandmother, who was stabbed to death in her west Charlotte apartment back in 1992.
Almost 28 years later, police are still looking for the person who did it.

Viola Pendergrass was known as the “Neighborhood Grandmother” and everyone in the Little Rock Apartments knew her back in 1992.
“She always taught me to treat everybody like I wanted to be treated,” grandson Christopher Pendergrass said.
Christopher Pendergrass said he was serving the United States in the Navy when he received some news that even 28 years later breaks his heart.
“When she was murdered, I was serving in the military,” Christopher Pendergrass said. “I got that call that I never imagined.”

Viola Pendergrass was 79 years old at the time. She was a retired cook who babysat children when one of her parents found that she had been brutally stabbed to death.
Suspects have come and gone through the years, but police have never been able to make a case against anyone. Christopher Pendergrass said that doesn’t matter because the pain of her death will never go away nor will his resolve to see her killer brought to justice.

“We’ve had a lot of family members pass on without knowing the truth,” Christopher Pendergrass said. “They may just be watching. So, it’s only a matter of time before the police pull up in front of their door.”
Christopher Pendergrass said part of the reason he continues to be optimistic is that he knows members of CMPD’s Cold Case Unit have not given up and continue to work the case.
