Cleveland County woman wins lottery again, following $1M win months earlier

SHELBY, N.C. — A Cleveland County woman is counting her blessings and dollars after winning $2 million from a scratch-off months after another scratch-off sent her home with $1 million.

Kenya Sloan, 41, of Shelby bought her second lucky ticket from Esha Food Mart in October. Sloan said this was her first time playing in the $2 million Diamond Dazzlers game. Her past win of $1 million was from a ticket she had purchased in August.

Sloan said she was in shock, she just stood there.

“I was like, ‘No way this happened again,’” Sloan said. “But it did.”

Sloan told family members who shared her shock. She said even though it’s hard to wrap her head around winning twice, she still feels blessed.

Sloan went to the lottery headquarters to claim her winnings on Thursday. She chose the lump-sum amount of $1.2 million, after state and federal taxes Sloan took home $855,006.00.

Following her first big win in August, Sloan set her sights on a brand new home. She purchased some land and construction on her home is almost finished.

As for her most recent winnings, Sloan said she is finally going to make her dream a reality by opening her own soul food restaurant.
