CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers in the Central Division are trying a new method of community policing. Eyewitness News reporter Angela Hong visited with officers and found out what they hope to accomplish by having roll call outside, on a street corner.
At South Tryon Street and Kingston Avenue, two communities converge -- new, modern apartments being built in the South End and then older homes in the transitioning Wilmore community.
It is the location where CMPD held their first ever “Cops on the Corner” event Tuesday morning.
They told Channel 9 that despite the growth in the area, issues like drug activity and loitering are still an issue, and said by having their regularly scheduled roll call outside at a corner store, it shows their presence in the community and gives residents an opportunity to talk to the officers about their concerns.
CMPD will next hold a Cops on the Corner event at the transit station uptown next week.
Hong explains how a re-drawing of the police district lines made it easier for CMPD to fight crime, on Eyewitness News at 5 p.m.
