CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The latest of now seven shootings on Charlotte’s highways has drivers concerned about safety.
Police were called to Interstate 77 southbound near Clanton Road early Sunday after a driver reported someone fired several shots into the car as he was traveling on the highway.
Five other people were inside the car but no one was hurt.
“Just not even being able to feel safe riding down the interstate,” said Tanya Onwuazor, who often travels the interstates. “Interstates area already very congested. It’s overwhelming. It’s something we need to be aware of.”
Channel 9 reached out to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department as this case marks the seventh highway shooting since late August. Each shooting happened on either Interstates 77 or 85, but the time of day has varied.
Some occurred in the early morning while others during evening rush hour. No one has been seriously injured.
“It’s terrible,” said Roy Staten, who told Channel 9 he often uses the interstate when taking his grandchildren to school or going to work. “I hope (police) can do something about it. I hope they can catch the suspects.”
