Police: Speed, alcohol played role in fatal southwest Charlotte crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was killed after his car ran off the road and crashed into a tree Sunday night in southwest Charlotte.

The wreck happened just before 9 p.m. on Erwin Road, near Moss Road, police said.

When officers got to the scene, they found a 2006 Lexus had hit a tree. The driver, 47-year-old Thaddeus Dewese, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was a single-car crash and Dewese was the only person inside the Lexus, CMPD said.

Investigators said they believe the Lexus was speeding before it left the road and hit the tree. Dewese was also not wearing a seatbelt, according to responding officers.

Authorities believe excessive speed and alcohol use are contributing factors in the crash.
