CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Sarah Fleming pulled into the Zaxby's on West Sugar Creek Road moments after robbers struck Tuesday morning.
"I thought to myself not again," Fleming said. "Everywhere you go, someone is being robbed these days."
Police said the armed robbery happened at 9:38 a.m. An employee of Zaxby's told police a man armed with a knife had approached him and demanded money.
Once the suspect obtained the property, he fled the scene in a vehicle driven by a second subject, police said. Minutes later, division officers had tracked down two suspects in a nearby shopping center.
Detectives charged Michael Mitchell, 39, with armed robbery.
Mitchell was taken to a hospital for minor medical issues.
Sources told Channel 9 it is because he had swallowed drugs.
While investigators collected evidence at the second scene at Zaxby’s, officers and detectives came and went as did restaurant workers and customers, who were still learning what had happened.
"Maybe they should have maybe security patrol more," said customer Gail Saravalli. “I don't know that I’ve seen it, and I shop at Food Lion all the time, and I’ve never seen it."
