CMS: Number of fights on school campuses soared in the past year

CHARLOTTE — The number of fights on the grounds of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools campuses has reached its highest level in the past five years, according to new information from CMS.

CMS said there were a total of 6,815 fights on school grounds during the 2021 to 2022 school year.

There were 359 fights during the previous school year, but that was during the start of the pandemic, when most students didn’t have in-person classes for a majority of the year.

The 2019 to 2020 school year had a total of 4,155 fights.

The 2018 to 2019 school year had 5,392 fights, and the 2017 to 2018 school year had a total of 5,194 fights.

The information was released as part of an open records request under the North Carolina Public Records Law.
