Commissioner who defied governor’s order opens up about how contracting virus changed his life

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — The chairman of the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners who defied the governor’s order a few months ago by reopening his restaurant said that fighting a disease shouldn’t shut down the economy.

A stance that was tested after he contracted the virus himself.

In May, Channel 9 told you that Chairman Carroll Mitchem was cited for defying a stay-at-home order that was in place at the time after opening the dining room of his restaurant, Mitchem’s Kitchen. Mitchem was issued the citation at the beginning of a Board of Commissioners meeting.

The commissioner told Channel 9′s Ken Lemon he has no regrets about taking that stand, but said he now understands why people take the virus so seriously.
