Convicted felon charged after woman found shot to death outside Iredell County home

UNION GROVE, N.C. — A convicted felon has been arrested after a woman was found shot to death outside an Iredell County home early Monday morning.

Deputies said 42-year-old Gerald Lunsford has been charged with murder and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The shooting happened just after 1 a.m. on Lunsford Lane in Union Grove.

Deputies said when they got to the home, they found 40-year-old Jera Lee Wagoner in the front yard suffering from a gunshot wound. They started to do CPR, but Wagoner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies found a witness inside the house, who said they saw two men run from the area before help arrived. During the investigation, officials said a man came to the scene to talk to deputies. He said his son had called him needing a ride early Monday morning and he was looking to talk to investigators.

Authorities met up with the man’s son, who identified Lunsford as the man who shot Wagoner. He said he ran from the scene because he was afraid he would get shot too.

Later Monday morning, Lunsford came to the sheriff’s office and agreed to be interviewed by deputies. During the interview, he reported shooting a gun and running because he was a convicted felon.

Lunsford is being held at the Iredell County Detention Center and he was not issued a bond, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

No other information has been released.
